Delta County School District would like to invite all Delta County students that attended 5th-8th grade during the 2023-2024 school year to join us at this year’s Career Exploration Academy!  Taking place June 17th – 21st, and June 24th – 28th, from 8:30am-11:30am, Technical College of the Rockies and Delta Middle School will be hosting a variety of hands-on educational programs centered on exploring new learning adventures and potential future career opportunities.  Students may sign up to attend one or both weeks, and will take a new class for each week they attend.  Attendance is free, and lunch will be provided. Transportation will be available from Cedaredge Elementary, Delta Middle, Hotchkiss K-8,  and Paonia PK-8.

Dairy and Agriculture Industry

An introduction into the agriculture industry with a focus on dairy. The goal of the class is to increase student’s ag literacy and prep them for activities like FFA in high school. Students will go through a variety of lessons dealing in production, animal wellness, technology in farming, and other bits about dairy cows.

Learn artisanal skills like crochet, macramé, sola wood flower dying and arranging, and more! Students will be making wonderful crafts that they can take home with them.

Learn basic diagnostics, repair, and the ins and outs of engine operations by building a working model engine.


Building with K’Nex and Robotics

Each day students will build a K’nex structure, and in the second half they will make a variety of robots, or power their K’nex creation. To top it off, we will paint with Oculus Quest VR.

Students will learn the crafts of sawing, sanding, and assembling a bench and table that they can take home with them.

Students will learn the science behind making food taste amazing, and how to go beyond set recipes to make delicious recipes with what they already have in the kitchen. The class will cover how to cook with seasonal ingredients, and how to preserve their delicacies with canning.

Students will be using essential oils to help reclaim calmness, clarity and peace while beautifying their nails and hands. They will also learn proper hair care, basic haircutting and using fashion colors.


Creative Sewing

Students will learn how to use sewing to express their creativity. They will be making scrunchies, a bowl cozy, shopping tote bags, a plushie stuffed animal, and a project of their choice.

 Students will learn about flowers and different floral arrangements. They will make their own fresh flower arrangements, leis, and boutonnieres. They will also plant flowers that each student can then take home.

This class will cover the history of Photography, Careers in Photography, High School Journalism/Yearbook, Responsible Social Media Use, and will have a Photo Contest. (Week 1)

Learn the basics of how to do CPR, wound treatment, sutures, phlebotomy, checking vital signs, and much more.

Each day students will learn about famous photos, photographers, and their techniques. They will then apply those styles to their own photos. They will explore black and white, color, nature, surrealism and realism in photography. Students will be able to go to the park for photo opportunities.

In this class, students will learn the basics of flight. They will have the opportunity to experiment with different methods of flight including: paper airplanes, RC planes, RC helicopter’s, water rockets, and more.

This class will focus on three methods of treasure hunting; gold panning/ sluicing, Metal detecting, and Magnet fishing. Students will then learn to apply these skills by walking to different locations and trying them out.

Week-1: Students will make a papier-mâché animal while learning the various parts of the animal, and labeling them for correct identification.

Week-2: Students will make digestive tracts for animals using tubes, clay, marbles and carboard, and learn how they all function together.

Is there a fee to attend?

No, the Summer Exploration Academy is free to all DCSD students that were in the 5th-8th grade during the 2023-2024 school year.

What are the class times?

Classes will be held from 8:30 am to 11:30 am, Monday – Friday, the weeks of June 17th – 21st, and June 24th – 28th.

Will food be provided?

We will be providing lunch for the students this year in a “grab-and-go” style at the end of class.

Will transportation be provided?

Busses will be transporting students from Cedaredge Elementary School, Delta Middle School, Hotchkiss K-8, and Paonia PK-8.  Bus pickup schedules will be sent out to parents and posted on this webpage.

Where will the classes be held?

Classes will be held at the Technical College of the Rockies campus located at 1765 US Hwy 50, Delta, CO 81416, or at Delta Middle School located at 401 E 10th St, Delta, CO 81416.  Parents will be notified of the location of the class their student will attend.

How do I apply?

You can click the “Apply Now” button near the top of the screen, or go to and complete the application.  Students will choose 3 potential classes to attend by order of preference, and will be assigned a class on a first come, first serve basis.  We will inform all students of the classes they are taking the week of June 10th. The last day you can apply is June 9th. Please contact if you have any further questions.

Transportation Information 

Students using our transportation will be picked up and dropped off at the locations and times listed below.  Students attending classes at Delta Middle School will need to get off at the Delta Middle School stop.  The list of classes and their campus can be found above, and they will be emailed to you as well.  Please plan on arriving 10 minutes early to both pick up and drop off your students in order to help keep the busses on schedule.
